What You Need to Know
Mobile Medicals provides comprehensive on-site forklift medical services for FLT operators across Ireland.
Our assessments are conducted by experienced specialist occupational health nurses at your location to ensure zero operational disruption. Our mobile medical units are fully equipped to deliver an HSA forklift medical review that meets the highest safety standards. The clinical screening process includes:
Health History Questionnaire
Vital Signs (blood pressure and pulse rate)
Lung Function Check
All medical results undergo a professional review by a specialist occupational health Physician. Following the assessment, a one page certificate of medical fitness is issued to the employer for your safety records. Should the initial review raise any medical questions impacting fitness for FLT operation, we will recommend a further medical assessment with the Mobile Medicals Occupational Health Physician (OHP) before a final fitness for driving decision is made.
For Fork Lift Truck (FLT) drivers the advice is: a driver fitness medical to be done every 5 years for those over 45 years and every year for those over 65 years.
Employers may implement more frequent medicals based on a specific site risk assessment. Under HSA Guidelines, those selected to operate fork lift trucks must possess the necessary level of physical and mental fitness for the task. In cases where a disability is potentially relevant to safe operation, employers should seek specialist medical advice.
Current guidelines recommend that operators maintain a standard of fitness equivalent to an ordinary driving licence. However, for technical work such as night driving or moving hazardous materials, it is suggested that drivers possess a level of fitness equivalent to a heavy goods vehicle (HGV) licence holder.
While the authorities do not demand medical assessments for all operators, the latest safety standards suggest that managers should screen potential operators before placement. Regular forklift medical examinations should follow the standard HGV requirements for operators in Ireland over the age of 45. Medical advice should always be sought if there is any doubt regarding a person’s physical or mental fitness to safely operate equipment.
